In the course of liberalisation, the European air transport market has undergone significant changes. In recent years, new airlines have constantly entered the market. The so-called low-cost carriers in particular are attracting a great deal of attention, as they advertise for customers with completely new concepts and low fares and whose segment is enjoying annual growth in passenger numbers. An important component of the concept is the approach to decentralised or regional airports due to the low or even free landing fees. Germany offers low-cost carriers alternative airport locations, including former military airports, most of which are located in rural areas and which were of great economic importance for the respective region. The Frankfurt Hahn Airport in the Hunsrück region is an example of such a conversion flight.
