The central aim of this work is to identify regional interconnection potentials in the field of nanotechnology in Aachen. To assess these potentials using the example region of Aachen, the approach of regional innovation networks has been developed. Before developing the approach of regional innovation networks, the subterms innovation and network are theoretically defined in the first step. The next chapter introduces the concept of innovation networks, followed by an exploration of the essential characteristics of innovation networks, taking into account the regional dimension. In the next step, the various actors and their regional interconnections are analyzed. Interconnections can occur both within a dimension of actors and between different dimensions of actors. The special role of emerging technologies is also considered.
