Since the beginning of the 1990s, the framework conditions for nonprofit organizations have fundamentally changed, presenting leaders on both the volunteer side and in the area of paid staff (employed executives) with new challenges. Selecting appropriate strategies, which represents one of the greatest challenges for most NPOs in this dynamic environment, should at least largely be the result of a strategic planning process. Thus, the crucial question for NPO management is: What NPO-specific characteristics and success factors need to be considered in the various phases of strategic planning to make this process efficient and ultimately select the strategies that ensure the long-term success of the organization?.
