Product details

Hollywood has discovered history for itself. After an era of sandal and pirate films in the 60s and 70s, which often appeared unintentionally comedic, the dream factory has been regularly producing films that deal with historical themes since the success of Ridley Scott's Gladiator in 2000. This phenomenon has since been dubbed "Historywood." Unlike the sandal and pirate films, these movies present themselves to the viewer as authentic representations of history. To achieve this, Hollywood goes to great lengths: using state-of-the-art technology, ancient cultures (Rome, Japan, etc.) are brought back to life, historians serve as consultants behind the camera, and even the screenwriters research historical facts. Despite this effort, there is almost always an outcry from the academic community, claiming that the films do not authentically represent the facts.
