Lack of respect and insufficient appreciation for the work done can take away caregivers' joy in their profession. This has clearly negative effects on work motivation and, if appreciation is lacking from the employer, also on company loyalty. This is the core finding of a psychological research study in which caregivers from various fields of elderly care as well as health and nursing care discussed their professional identity experiences, their workload, and its impact on their attachment to their organizations. While work psychologists demand a human-centered design of working conditions in organizations, an increasing number of people in need of care must be supported by fewer and fewer caregivers. The shortage of skilled workers and the growing number of people requiring care due to demographic changes are additional challenges.
