In Germany, approximately 5 million children and adolescents under the age of 18 live in various family structures. The German Central Office for Addiction Prevention (DHS) estimates that about 2.5 million individuals are in need of treatment for alcohol dependence. In 1992, over 860,000 young people in the aforementioned age group had direct experiences with the alcohol addiction of one of their parents. Alcoholism in the family poses a significant problem for children and adolescents, as they face two phenomena that they cannot answer themselves. The first is a question: Why doesn’t my mother (or father, or both parents) love me anymore? The second phenomenon corresponds to a self-accusation: I am to blame for my mother (my father, etc.) being unable to stop drinking because I cannot help them.
