Comedy is raging on all television channels, laughter clubs are springing up worldwide, laughter seminars are booming in business, and clowns are making patients laugh in hospitals. Is this new wave of laughter a symptom of our fun and event-driven society, or a sign that laughter is stuck in our throats? The latter assumption, that we have forgotten how to laugh and now need tutoring in humor, was the impetus to explore the significance of humor and laughter and to emphasize the healing effects of humor in this work. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the diversity of humor, to clarify this complex phenomenon, and to present humor as an intervention tool in therapy, counseling, and education. Insights from humor research will be incorporated into this work, highlighting the health-promoting aspects of humor.
