For more than 100 years, running has been at the center of scientific interest. The development of knowledge about this central human movement skill, alongside walking, can be described through the evolution of measurement techniques. In addition to chronophotography, film analyses were conducted that provided initial insights into human movement behavior while running. Alongside the further development of kinematic methods, dynamography enabled the measurement of ground reaction forces. In addition to purely biomechanically oriented methods, the development of sports medical analysis techniques contributed fundamental insights into energy provision during running. However, the foundations for the outwardly visible movement skills of humans, such as running, walking, and jumping, are the neural control and regulation systems.
