Tempering is a process that aims to optimize the physical, climatic, and physiological conditions in a building by heating the building envelope. This method has been used for over 25 years in the restoration of historic buildings. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation (BLfD), as the developer of tempering and a proponent of this method, promises comprehensive building protection that is associated with energy savings. However, there are also opposing views in the literature that see tempering solely as a means to address local damage and as space heating only in conjunction with increased energy expenditure. The debate between proponents and critics of tempering is evidently controversial, with the clarification of terms being complex and dependent on interests. The discussion on tempering shows that despite numerous arguments, differing opinions exist.
