Relics and their contemporary counterparts. How much trust should we place in our perception? How much have the symbols of cultural identity generation changed while the basic emotions have remained the same? Bernhard Holaschke (born 1986 in Heilbronn, lives and works in Berlin and Wuppertal) engages with the transformation of cultural historiography and its artifacts in his practice. Incorporating video, painting, drawing, objects, and sculpture, Holaschke addresses iconographic representations of cultural identity goods and relics. The artist utilizes both art-historically traditional motifs and images from pop culture from the 1990s to the present. His works evoke emotions in viewers, with fear, laughter, irritation, and surprise playing a central role. Do You Believe in Gods presents a selection of 111 ink drawings and collages created in the past twelve months.
