Rainer Dissel (born 1953 in Gelsenkirchen, lives and works near Frankfurt am Main) places particular emphasis on the semantics of everyday phenomena in his works and highlights their variability in the artistic process. In oversized as well as small-format collages and tempera paintings on canvas, he integrates personal memory objects such as photos, newspaper clippings, gauze, and fabrics. The works thematically and formally address the principle of the palimpsest, the overwriting of existing material. The aesthetic and analytical engagement is accompanied by a struggle with life-world questions of politics, power, freedom, and the positioning of art within its own history. The book showcases selected works by the artist from the last twenty years. In addition to paintings and collages, previously unpublished artist books are also presented.
