Transformation of Nature and Culture

The splendor of the equatorial forests, the lush vegetation of Brazil, and the cultural implications of plant species and flowers are firmly embedded in the visual world of Luzia Simons (born 1953 in Quixadá, Ceará, Brazil; lives and works in Berlin). In watercolors, paintings, photographs, and tapestries, the artist explores the impenetrable role of nature and creates poetic studies of forms and colors through her specially developed imaging techniques. Simons is a pioneer in the development of scanography, a media technique that combines elements of painting and photography. Using a high-resolution scanner, she arranges flowers and leaves from various species of tulips, resulting in impressive works of intense color brilliance and extraordinary sharpness. Simons powerfully illustrates in her work that nature and culture are in constant transformation, and that identities are never static.

The publication "Traces" provides a comprehensive insight into the artist's oeuvre and offers an overview of exhibitions from the past three decades. The texts were written by Tereza de Arruda, Chantal Colleu-Dumond, and Irina Hiebert Grun.
