The city of Djibouti is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Djibouti, a nation in the Horn of Africa. It is located on a peninsula that separates the Gulf of Aden from the Gulf of Tadjoura. Djibouti was founded in 1888 by the Spaniard Eloi Pino as a port city and became the capital of French Somaliland in 1891, replacing Tadjoura. It remained the capital of the subsequent colonial government of the French territory of the Afar and Issas, as well as the independent country of Djibouti.
