Villas and country houses characteristically shape the face of the Hamburg Elbvororte. Many of these houses were built between 1900 and 1935. Has a unique Hamburg home style emerged here? In fact, a remarkable stylistic diversity unfolds between tradition and modernity, which has also been recognized outside of Hamburg. All the prominent Hamburg architects of this time built residential houses in the Elbvororte: from traditionalists like Walther Baedecker and Fernando Lorenzen to modernists like Rudolf Lodders, Werner Kallmorgen, Erich Elingius, and Karl Schneider. But also prominent foreign architects such as Hermann Muthesius, Martin Elsaesser, and Henry van de Velde left their mark here. Enriched by analyses of interior design, garden layout, and regional reception, the book addresses a previously unexplored topic.
