Das Weiszheithaus
German, Holger Siemann, 2017Product details
In 2011, Sven Gabbert unexpectedly inherits a multi-family house in Prenzlauer Berg, built in 1900, with 30 apartments: the Weiszheithaus. The attic houses a quirky archive, where someone has collected not only the works, diaries, manuscripts, and letters of the famous East German writer Kurt Weiszheit for decades, but also photos, official documents, and other records of the various residents of the house. Confined to a wheelchair due to an accident, Sven finds his only distraction in exploring the history of his house. The seemingly abundant sources turn out to be a maelstrom, as Kurt Weiszheit's writings are like shards of mirrors, with different versions of his Weiszheit stories contradicting each other. Letters, diaries, patient records, advertising signs, and rental books often provide evidence to the contrary. What is true? And what is fabricated? A narrative plays with realities.
