The Danube served as an outer border of the Roman Empire for more than 400 years. During this time, numerous military installations, such as forts and watchtowers, as well as civilian settlements and administrative centers, were established along the Austrian section of the Limes. Many of these became the nuclei of modern cities and towns along the Danube, whose urban landscape is still sometimes defined by remnants of Roman buildings and road layouts. In recent decades, interest in these testimonies of Roman history has experienced a significant resurgence, which includes not only the scientific exploration of selected archaeological sites but also the presentation of the latest findings to the interested public.
