Surveys indicate that today's youth are better informed about the era of National Socialism than the first post-war generation. Nevertheless, they wish for a grandfather who was "not a Nazi" or who was part of the resistance. A representative study by the polling institute Emnid shows that almost half of Germans assume that their own parents or grandparents had a very negative or somewhat negative attitude towards National Socialism. Among respondents with a higher level of education, even 56% attributed a critical stance on National Socialism to their family witnesses. Only 6% admitted that their ancestors were somewhat positive (4%) or even very positive (2%) towards it. If that were true, the Nazi regime would have been teeming with opponents. The opposite was the case. The election results in the late Weimar Republic alone cast doubt on this familial historical narrative.
