Product details

A sample reading can be found at. The painter Dora Hitz (1853-1924) brought modernity to Berlin. Along with Max Liebermann, she was part of the artistic avant-garde of the Association of the XI and was a founding member of the Berlin Secession in 1899. She moved from Munich to become a court painter at the royal court in Bucharest. This was followed by inspiring years in Paris, after which she settled in imperial Berlin. The book examines the extent to which she fought for the new and what in her works could already be characterized as old by 1925. Despite the challenges of her time, when women were still denied access to art academies, she managed to make a name for herself, achieve success in exhibitions, and gain recognition in art criticism. Hitz, who remained single throughout her life, ran her own painting school at Lützowplatz in Berlin and relied on the sale of her paintings. On the 100th anniversary of her death, this publication is being released as a collaborative project of the Liebermann Villa at Wannsee, Humboldt University of Berlin, and the Bröhan Museum to take a closer look at the life and work of the artist.
