Retrospectives are one of the key pillars of a successful agile transition and one of the best tools for implementing the necessary cultural changes within an organization. However, retrospectives can also be a valuable aid outside of the agile context. They are utilized in traditional project management as well, for example, in lessons-learned workshops. Retrospectives are a meaningful tool whenever it comes to reflecting on the past and developing potential changes based on that reflection. The author addresses practical aspects and provides many examples on how to prepare and facilitate retrospectives. He also discusses distributed retrospectives, solution-oriented retrospectives, and systemic retrospectives, and describes the concept of "after the retro is before the retro." Additionally, typical pitfalls are highlighted.
