The world we live in has always been marked by violence. Modern psychology has attempted to interpret this pervasive aggressiveness as natural and perhaps even necessary. However, humanity's propensity for violence seems to be increasing. The Greek monk Evagrios Pontikos, who lived in the 4th century, already examined this phenomenon at that time and posited in his writings that humans are constantly caught in the tension between virtues and vices. According to his belief, the vice of anger can only be effectively countered by embracing the virtue of Christian love and, consequently, gentleness.
