After Aeschylus and Sophocles, the collection of the three great tragedians is now complete with Euripides. In fact, he managed to surpass his famous predecessors in terms of popularity. His literary significance extends to the present day, and he is indispensable on German stages. J.J. Donner's classic translation is particularly notable for respecting the ancient meter. The only complete edition of the surviving dramas of Euripides in the German language is published in two volumes. Volume II contains the two Iphigenia dramas, Medea, the Phoenician Women, the Suppliants, the Trojan Women, Ion, and Orestes, as well as the satyr play The Cyclops. Bernhard Zimmermann's informative foreword, separate introductions to each of the included dramas, afterthoughts on the conditions of creation and performance of ancient drama, family trees, and glossaries are also included.
