"Outside the Door" is rightly considered the piece that best expresses the self-perception of war returnees after World War II. It is a popular school reading, although its exclusion of all other victims of the war is now being critically questioned. Borchert's short stories, such as "At Night the Rats Sleep" and "The Bread," are undisputed classics of the genre.
