The Slovenian and Italian Karst, a landscape of extraordinary beauty and diversity, is the focus this time of the author team led by Gerhard Pilgram. Both the Nostranjski Kras, the "classic" Slovenian Karst of Primorska, and the Carso Triestino, including the coast of Julian Venetia, will be explored on foot. Several expeditions will also take place at the Kraski rob, the Karst edge, as well as in Slovenska Istra near the border with Croatia. In addition to prominent locations such as Lake Zirknica, the Škocjan Caves, and Val Rosandra, which will each be viewed from an unusual perspective, the authors particularly focus on those remote areas of the Karst that are rarely mentioned in ordinary travel guides. The emphasis is on the tumultuous political history of the region as well as the everyday culture of the villages, which are portrayed with much sympathy and humor.
