No matter how secure the order of a marriage may be, it must prove itself when challenged by thoughts of adventure, freedom, and danger. The allure of something entirely different, lying outside of it, and mentally unfaithful, seeks to be experienced when it arises: in a dreamlike reality, or at least in a reality-close dream. Schnitzler tells this in his incomparable novella about Fridolin and Albertine. He fascinatingly depicts, in a strict structure, the parallel, strongly erotic experiences of the couple in one night: he is mysteriously led into an orgiastic society - she has slipped into the excitement of an incomparable dream. The stranger that Fridolin meets on this passionate night sacrifices herself for him, because in this bacchanalian circle, any outsider who ventures in is condemned to death.
