Italy in the 14th century: After the family of the young noblewoman Caterina falls victim to a grand conspiracy, she must fend for herself. The shady Fabrizio, her father's deputy, wants to buy the mercenary army she has inherited. However, she does not give up the army; instead, she leads it into battle—much to the dismay of the enemies of the Duke of Molterossa, in whose service she now stands.
