When the journalist Lilli Gruber, who lives in Rome, comes across the diaries of her great-grandmother Rosa, she realizes how deeply rooted she is in her family and in her native South Tyrol. She sets out to fathom the fate of Rosa and her daughter Hella, who get caught up in the maelstrom of history at the beginning of the 20th century.
