The medieval Johannes Tauler was a rebellious stormer of heaven. Who else at that time dared to say that the true soul is immortal? Seven centuries after Tauler's emergence in Cologne and Strasbourg, the image of the world has radically changed, yet the path inward remains the same. Tauler uncompromisingly, lovingly, and clearly pointed it out through his sermons and his own life. As a successor to his teacher, Meister Eckhart, he sought to reconnect people with the ground of the soul, or the soul's foundation, as Eckhart called it. By this, he meant the principle of light that is anchored in the human heart. In the difficult times of the 14th century, Tauler brought religion back to where it belongs: to the heart of humanity, to its motives, its capacities, to love and to charity.
