It’s raining and a cold wind sweeps through the streets of Canterbury as Ella says goodbye to Aileen after choir practice. The next morning, Aileen is found dead. At first, it looks like a hit-and-run accident, but then it turns out that Aileen had strong sedatives in her blood. Determined, Ella, who has recently moved to Canterbury, begins to investigate Aileen's life. In the process, she uncovers inconsistencies, encounters crocheting elderly ladies, a grumpy professor, a clever neighborhood boy, a strikingly attractive young man in the pub, and a detective inspector who doesn’t make her life any easier.
