The cheerful Dshamilja meets and falls in love with the dreamy Danijar. However, she is already married to another man. Through the eyes of a child beginning to understand, her young brother-in-law Sëit tells her of the power that love can hold. Chinghiz Aitmatov worked as a veterinarian at the experimental farm of the Livestock Research Institute in Kyrgyzstan. He had already published some shorter stories and completed an internship at the Maxim Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow in 1956. For his diploma thesis, he wrote a story titled Dshamilja, and since then, it has traveled around the world.
