Joseph Roth's first novel was published shortly before Hitler's attempted coup in Munich and anticipated reality. Through the character of the young lieutenant Lohse, who has to work as a private tutor in Berlin after World War I, it visionary and exemplarily presents the emerging generation of followers. Disappointed and directionless, they become willing helpers of right-wing radicalism.
