Thomas Bridges grows up as the adopted son of a British missionary at the southern tip of South America, among the children of the Yamana. Fascinated by the rich world and language of this people, he begins obsessively writing down their words. This valuable collection, his book, is stolen from him decades later and falls into the hands of the German ethnologist Ferdinand Hestermann. Hestermann senses that he is dealing with a unique treasure. He dedicates his life to it. When the Nazis begin to plunder libraries in the 1930s, he embarks on a dangerous journey to secure the book.
