In some exile memoirs, when discussing a route through the Pyrenees from occupied France, there is mention of an "F-route" - who or what lies behind the F is not explained. This book solves that mystery: the old smuggler's path was named after Lisa and Hans Fittko, who led opponents of Hitler, threatened with extradition, to the Spanish border for months. It would not have been written if Gershom Scholem had not happened to hear about Lisa Fittko and urged her to document her crossing of the Pyrenees with Walter Benjamin.
