Searching for a new home. That we are Jews goes without saying. That we were armed, we cannot deny. They say we are partisans. Somewhere in the forests of Belarus in 1943, two scattered soldiers of the Red Army meet. Both have lost their unit, both are Jews, and so they continue on together. One day, they come across blockhouses where more Jews are hiding amidst the snowy swamps. But the quarters are discovered by the Germans, and only a few men and women manage to escape. They wander further west, a poorly equipped group caught between all fronts, a Jewish partisan unit that looks like a wandering band of bandits, pursued by the Germans, eyed with suspicion by Russians and Poles, tolerated, avoided. "When, if not now," the partisans sing the Talmud.
