The master of the German Renaissance, Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), was primarily famous for his woodcuts, but he was also an outstanding painter whose works exemplify the German art scene of his time. Dürer is even regarded as the embodiment of the entire German High Renaissance. His artistic development was significantly influenced by his travels to Italy, where he studied with Giovanni Bellini. He combines German and Italian elements in his works. Dürer was ambitious and eager to learn; in his later years, he researched and wrote about art theory and mathematics.
