The Düsseldorf district of Derendorf was first documented around 1100. The village, surrounded by trees, was not spared from the onset of industrialization at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. This significantly changed Derendorf. The photographs document the working world and private life from about 1880 to 1970, capturing all the small events that made everyday life vibrant. They also provide evidence of how major political events influenced a single district: the impacts of the revolutions during the interwar period, National Socialism, and World War II, along with its consequences, shaped the lives of the people in Derendorf.
