A village in East Frisia, cows graze in the meadows, and occasionally the noise of a low-flying aircraft shatters the silence. Behind the trimmed thuja hedges of the new housing estate, flowers bloom, and freshly waxed new cars shine in the driveways. Into this world, in the mid-1970s, Daniel Kuper is born, the scion of a druggist dynasty. A frail, reserved boy with far too much imagination and too few opportunities. But soon strange things begin to happen: in the middle of summer, there is heavy snowfall, a crop circle appears, a student stands on the train tracks, and swastikas emerge on the walls of houses. Daniel Kuper is held responsible for all of this. And the more he tries to refute the accusations, the more entangled he becomes in them. Daniel Kuper begins a struggle against the village and its inhabitants. They are the ones he rebels against.
