Evelyn and Muriel Axon, mother and daughter, lead a ghostly life. Their neighbors find them dreadful, but Evelyn doesn't care about contact with others anyway. She fiercely drives away any social worker who tries to discuss support options for her disabled daughter. Inside the house, mother and daughter only speak when necessary; each secretly observes the other, waiting for an opportunity to gain an advantage. However, their routine life, despite all the hostility, is suddenly at serious risk: the mentally challenged Muriel seems to be pregnant. How can that be, when she never leaves the house?
