A tiny village in the moors of Yorkshire: Alex Slingsby is a former professional footballer, a primary school teacher in Sinderby, and a man with ambitions. Supported by the headmaster, an exiled Hungarian with a PhD in philosophy, he takes on the local amateur football team. The two form an unconventional coaching duo. For instance, one of the key positions in the team is filled based on the motto: "A goalkeeper doesn't have to be a good footballer, he just needs to have spatial awareness." Alongside this goalkeeper, who also has a passion for tidying up, there is a slightly depressed star striker and the vicar, whose sister is a devout Jehovah's Witness. Gradually, a team begins to form from this group of misfits. Miraculously, the ordinary men from Sinderby make it to the final of the F.A. Cup at Wembley Stadium.
