In 2002, the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments in Russia were re-regulated. However, there were hardly any substantive changes; in particular, a recognition agreement is still fundamentally required. In the absence of such an agreement, German judgments cannot be enforced in Russia, while from the German perspective, there is a lack of reciprocity. Nevertheless, the number of relevant treaties has steadily increased; from a European viewpoint, two multilateral agreements are particularly significant, as they provide extensive freedom of judgment within the CIS. Despite these reforms, the enforcement of arbitration awards is still considerably easier than that of court judgments; Russian arbitration law meets international standards. In contrast, there are some peculiarities in enforcement law.
