Under the title "History of the German People and Their Culture in the Middle Ages," Heinrich Gerdes published a two-volume work in which he aims to complement the external history of the German people in the Middle Ages with representations of internal conditions. The foundation of this contribution to the developmental history of the German people consists of sources that are less significant for political history but are all the more valuable for illustrating the peculiar living conditions of the Middle Ages. The first volume, published in 1891, is titled "History of the German People and Their Culture during the Time of the Carolingian and Saxon Kings." The second volume, "History of the Salian Emperors and Their Time," was published in 1898.
