Product details
In the summer semester of 1933, Fritz Schulz (1879-1957) lectured at the University of Berlin on "Principles of Roman Law." The lecture was a declaration of war against the newly established Nazi regime of terror. With extraordinary courage and his characteristic enthusiasm, Schulz addressed the elements of the legal order that the dictatorship had just set out to abolish: law and justice, freedom, humanity, loyalty, and security. After the summer semester of 1933, Schulz was prevented from continuing his lectures. In 1934, Duncker & Humblot published the lectures, which had since been developed into a book. Without compromising the historically-critical method of modern philology—and without regard for disciplinary boundaries with social or cultural history—Schulz aims to elucidate the fundamental principles that ensure the enduring significance of Roman law.
