The Yearbook on Academic Freedom primarily addresses challenges and threats to academic freedom. However, the aim of the yearbook does not stop there. It seeks to counteract the unfortunately widespread cancel culture in the academic field by providing space for contributions and theses that struggle to be published not due to their content quality, but because of their subject matter or statements. This includes a variety of topics such as Islam (particularly the headscarf), energy policy, gender, discrimination, and racism. What they all have in common is that many publishers avoid these topics out of fear of backlash or at least ensure that certain theses are toned down. The editor sees this as a serious problem for academic freedom, but also for science as a whole. The yearbook aims to promote free debate on these issues.
