In the past, shrimp were primarily regarded as an interesting addition to fish stock, but today they have captivated many aquarists. In the current boom, it is easy to overlook that these crustaceans have been regularly kept in freshwater aquariums for decades; however, these were mostly representatives of the larger species that were not as easily at risk of becoming a meal for the fish. The tiny dwarf shrimp, which are also housed in specialized aquariums, are a recent and delightful phenomenon in the aquarium hobby. When cared for according to their needs, dwarf shrimp of the genera Caridina and Neocaridina make very rewarding aquarium pets.
