Where the chain of causes and effects is only briefly and partially known, the realization of a purpose requires the occurrence that directly brings it about. However, it is evident that this occurrence will often not be directly attainable. While the less cultivated person must forgo their goal in this case, the more advanced individual will adopt a method that, although it does not achieve the purpose itself, brings about some other occurrence that in turn leads to that purpose."
