Product details

Werner Renfer (1898-1936), the first modern poet of the Bernese Jura, has remained a hidden gem to this day. From his youth as a farmer's son in Corgémont until just days before his untimely death, he wrote poetry; even his novel "Hannebarde" and his stories are nothing more than lyrical prose. This selection of around sixty poems, translated into English for the first time by Christoph Ferber, includes works from the collections "Profils" (1927) and "La Beauté du Monde" (1934), as well as scattered and posthumous lyric poetry. These are remarkably modern poems, mostly in free verse, featuring surprising imagery and disruptions. Renfer succeeded in creating a distinctive poetic body of work in just a few years: poems that are true gems, full of refinement, with a unique style that is sometimes burlesque, sometimes melancholic, often naïve-ironic.
