Together with his daughter Magdalena and her husband Simon, the executioner Jakob Kuisl travels to Bamberg in 1668. What was planned as a family visit soon turns into a nightmare: a murderer is on the loose in Bamberg. The severed limbs of the victims are found in the filth outside the city gates. Rumors quickly spread that the murders are the work of a werewolf. Jakob Kuisl refuses to subscribe to this superstition and sets out to find the "Devil of Bamberg.".
