Product details

Biosphere reserves are international protected areas recognized by UNESCO. They aim for sustainable development and serve as model regions for new methods and economic practices. A sustainable tourism development that seeks to balance resource protection with economic growth while involving the local population represents a way to achieve these goals and functions. Quantifiable data on the economic significance of nature tourism in biosphere reserves, as well as visitor demographics and demand, are crucial foundations for the long-term valuation of these areas. This volume initially attempts to determine the importance of tourism in German biosphere reserves for the respective regional economy through six case studies. An extrapolation estimates how the situation for biosphere reserves stands nationwide in Germany. The results clearly show that tourism associated with biosphere reserves makes a significant economic contribution to the regional economy. Therefore, biosphere reserves in Germany have real opportunities to become successful destinations in the German tourism market in the long run. Additionally, the findings of this study provide an important basis for achieving greater acceptance and developing strategies for sustainable development in German biosphere reserves.
