For over thirty years, and continuously since 1987, the Reitschule has been the beloved, persistent blemish of Bern. This cherished blemish cannot be prettified or driven away. On the contrary, as a significant and magnificent cultural and political center, the Reitschule radiates far beyond the city limits. Many people grow up in the Reitschule, and some even grow older there. However, the Reitschule is also a free space that allows for a critical examination of what is taken for granted, normal, and unchangeable. It is the place where suppressed questions of the patriarchal-capitalist order are brought to the forefront. It embodies resistance and revolt, as well as art and culture. In a time when calls for borders, regulation, control, punishment, order, and system become more anxious and shrill, and when nostalgic recollections of old, deceitful models are invoked.
