Product details

Overwhelmed, the young Swiss writer Robert Walser (1878 - 1956) stood at the Anhalter Bahnhof in Berlin in the spring of 1905. The vibrant metropolis of the German Empire immediately captivated him. He had already tried twice before to establish himself in this big city. His brother Karl Walser, who had become a famous painter and stage designer, lived in Charlottenburg. After the publication of his first book "Fritz Kochers Aufsätze," for which his brother provided the illustrations, Walser hoped to finally achieve breakthrough success as a writer. Where else, if not in Berlin, would he find the right publisher and, above all, an enthusiastic audience? His successful brother Karl took him in at his own apartment and introduced him to artistic circles. He also managed to place the reserved Robert Walser at the Bruno Cassirer publishing house, where editor Christian Morgenstern took an interest in his novel "Geschwister Tanner." Walser experienced his most productive time in Berlin. His next two novels, "Der Gehilfe" and "Jacob von Gunten," were also published here. However, the whimsical poet did not feel comfortable among all the vain artists and writers. Depressed, he returned to Switzerland in 1912.
