Product details

The writer Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) found the peace she needed for writing in Sussex, southern England. In 1919, she and her husband Leonard Woolf purchased Monk’s House, a cottage located at the edge of the small village of Rodmell. Virginia stated that this would be our address forever and ever; I have even marked our graves in the cemetery that borders our meadow. Just an hour's train ride from London, it was an ideal retreat. In the autumn of 1940, the Woolfs finally moved to Rodmell permanently. For Virginia, Monk’s House had a kind of promenade charm that sneaks into one’s heart. Here, she wrote the novels Jacob's Room, Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, and The Waves. Not to mention the novel-biography Orlando, inspired by her fellow writer Vita Sackville-West.
